Construction of deep-discount grocer Aldi U.S.’ brand new Gilbert store was an exciting project and opened not long ago. Located at 1801 E Pecos Road near the intersection of Val Vista Drive, just north of the Santan Freeway, the Gilbert location is among the first four new Aldi stores to appear in the Greater Phoenix area. In addition to Gilbert, Delta Construction developed another recently opened Aldi store in Peoria.
This Gilbert location has the distinction of being one of the largest of Aldi’s stores at nearly 22,000sqft. In contrast, the newly opened Peoria location was a more typical 12,000sqft.
As the local general contractor, Aldi’s new Gilbert facility included loading docks as well as coordinating final build-out/occupation with Aldi’s national vendors. Delta Construction also performed site work for the shopping center’s entire footprint, in preparation for adjacent retail development in the near future.
Aldi outlets are comparatively smaller than typical “big box” supermarkets and appeal to budget-conscious shoppers. The popular grocer typically features its’ own private label of quality grocery products, along with a sprinkling of popular national brands.
The Gilbert facility includes sustainable building elements, such as solar panels, LED lighting and environmentally friendly refrigeration systems.
The Aldi brand – popular in the Midwest and eastern U.S – is aggressively expanding into Arizona and California, in addition to growing its recent entry into the U.S. Gulf Coast states. According Aldi U.S., more locations are planned for the Phoenix and Tucson communities.
The Batavia, Illinois-headquartered Aldi U.S. operates more than 2,000 stores in 36 states. As 2021 unfolds, the company plans to open about 100 more new stores. Many – like the Gilbert store – feature curbside customer pickup.
